Guwahati: One of Assam's most dreaded criminals, Bubu Konwar, has been gunned down by the police in an encounter. Konwar had carried out several high-profile killings in the state. In the last few years, it had killed 42 people. The killed in an encounter with police in Sibsagar district on Wednesday evening. Bubu Konwar, 43, had been involved in several crimes such as car theft, drug dealing, extortion, kidnapping for ransom. 50 cases were registered against him in several districts.

Special DGP GP Singh tweeted on Wednesday night that "aAprofessional criminal, Bubu Konwar, was seriously injured in firing with police at Gelaki in Sibsagar, he had targeted the police team. He was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was declared brought dead at The Gayaki Civil Hospital. A pistol has been recovered from him".

According to police information, the incident took place when Konwar, who was riding a scooter with an associate, tried to escape from the police check and opened fire on the personnel. His partner managed to escape.
