After the announcement of rewards for information that leads to rhino poachers, the Assam Police Department has also announced rewards for information leading to persons or rackets involved in illegal smuggling and theft of fertilisers.

In a tweet, Special Director General of Police (DGP) Law and Order GP Singh requested people to give information on "fertiliser pilferage." He urged the public to share such information with the district police or higher-ups. In his tweet, he said, "Those sharing information will be appropriately rewarded and recognised."

"All Assam Police district SSPs and Range Officers have been directed to attend meetings with fertiliser dealers/wholesalers & transporters and take decisive, stern, merciless measures to ensure that fertiliser given to Assam farmers is not pilfered," he said.

The Cachar Police nabbed at least nine people in the final week of January. Eight of the nine people detained were drivers. In addition, police confiscated 8,476 sacks of fertiliser that were intended to be in government-run shops.
