GUWAHATI: Assam's newly formed "sub-districts" will now be officially known as "co-districts," following a recent decision by the state government. This name change aims to enhance administrative efficiency and clarity in the region.

The government has issued an order that overrides previous notifications from the Department dated September 12, 2023, and September 28, 2024, and the new title will take effect immediately.

Under the new administrative structure, the Additional District Commissioner in these co-districts will now be referred to as the Co-District Commissioner (CDC). Additionally, the co-districts will be called "Xama-Zilla" in Assamese, and the Co-District Commissioner will hold the title "Xama-Zilla Aayukta" in the local language.

Starting October 4, 39 co-districts across 21 districts in Assam will become operational. This change means that residents will no longer need to visit the District Commissioner's office for various government services; many issues can now be addressed directly at the co-district office. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to streamline administrative processes and make local governance more accessible.
