On Monday late evening, the Crime Branch detained a person suspected of being involved in the illegal betel nut smuggling racket in Byrnihat. Prashanta Boro has been identified as the culprit, according to a police source. He was detained when information revealed that he was involved in the illegal trade and transportation of "Burmese supari," which is generally smuggled into the country from Myanmar.

The accused was detained on suspicion of conducting a transportation ring from Changsari to Kokrajhar. Last month, 600 sacks of "Burmese supari" were seized from three trucks in Cachar, leading to the arrest of several other people across the state. High-ranking nut traders were among those detained.

Even on February 5, when he reportedly "tried to run from a police vehicle," an accused was shot by police in Silchar's Salchapra area. The suspect has been identified as Hazi Nizam Uddin, who controls the racket in Barak Valley, according to the police. However, the accused detained in Byrnihat is presently being questioned in order to identify his way of operation and other persons with whom he is involved.
