FINLAND: Finland's former Foreign Minister and long-time Member of Parliament, Erkki Tuomioja, expressed doubts that his country's probable inclusion in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) would boost its security.

Tuomioja, speaking about his new book "Finland and NATO" on Monday, asked what NATO countries would be willing to do in practise to assist Finland in the case of a war, according state media report.

He added that if Finland joined NATO, it would become the key front in a battle between NATO and Russia. "I believe NATO would come out on top in the end and emerge as Finland's liberator, but what would be left of us by then, especially if nuclear weapons are used?" Tuomioja was the one who inquired.

He believes that turning the 1,300-kilometer border between Finland and Russia into a military war zone is not in either country's best interests.

Finland, in his opinion, should be able to apply for NATO membership, but now is not the time to do it.
