Shillong: Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik has constituted three regional committees to investigate the Assam-Meghalaya border dispute. Whose purpose is to investigate the status of six disputed areas located on the Assam-Meghalaya border. The members of the committees have also been directed to engage in discussions with the land dispute committees set up in Assam by the Governor of Meghalaya. The disputed lands along the inter-state border include Tarabari, Gijang and Hahim in West Khasi Hills district, Ratchera in East Jaintia Hills and Boklapara and Khanapara-Pilangkata in Ri-Roi district.
These committees will be headed by the cabinet minister of Meghalaya. A notification said that the coordinating committee for Ri-Bhoi district would be headed by Deputy Chief Minister Preston Tynsong. Also, the committee for West Khasi Hills district will be chaired by Public Health Engineering Minister R Tongkhar and state Transport Minister Sniyabhalang Dhar will chair the committee for East Jaintia Hills.
As per the directions of the Governor of Meghalaya, the claims and counter claims of both the states can be verified by the committees during discussion. The order also directed the Deputy Commissioners of West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts to provide secretarial and logistic support to the committees. In addition, the committees will engage in discussions with the local people, elected members of the Autonomous District Council and learn about their assumptions to establish the geographical location of the villages.
