The first ever underwater tunnel in Assam would connect Numaligarh with Gohpur says Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. This revolutionary undertaking will be the first railroad tunnel through the Brahmaputra River in northeast India and is expected to cost Rs6,000 corers. The opening of the project tender next month will be a critical turning point for the region’s transport infrastructure. 

Himanta Biswa Sarma also said that there are several bridges over the river so we can have an underwater tunnel. We know about the Atal tunnel of Jammu and Kashmir over the mountains. So he thought why cannot have a tunnel under the river Brahmaputra where railways and vehicles both can move.

 He also said that this might be a dream but when he raised this project in Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given his agreement on the construction of the underwater tunnel. And got support from the high command in Delhi.

The underwater Numaligarh- Gohpur is expected to have a significant positive impact on the area. It will build up trade and commerce opportunities improve connectivity for the residents and boost tourism. Currently, the only way to travel the Brahmaputra River is through ferries and the bridge that is built up. Which are very time-consuming and during monsoon, it’s all disarray and trafficked area.

The tunnel length is approximately 15 kilometers. The tender process will start on 4 July 2023 to make milestones for Assam’s transportation infrastructure. The two banks of the Brahmaputra River North and South will come closer.

Assam government give chase to the groundbreaking project showing the promise for the advancement of infrastructure development state. This project commits the economic growth, attracting investments, and fostering regional integration. It will bring transformational change in the transportation infrastructure of the area.

When Numaligarh- Godhpur underwater tunnel will be constructed it will not just improve connectivity but also stands as an indicator of Assam's resolve to overcome topographical barriers and change its transportation system. Connecting the north and south banks of the Brahmaputra River will mark a great accomplishment and demonstrate the state’s ambition for a more connected and prosperous future.
