New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday announced the dates for assembly elections in UP, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa at a press conference. The elections will be held in February and March this year. Amid concerns over the growing corona cases in the country, the Election Commission said our "first and most important objective" is a "covid-safe election." Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra said that a lot of planning has been carefully prepared for this. At the same time, because some people will be infected with corona and, therefore, a question arises as to how those who are quarantined will vote. In such a case, a postal ballot facility will be available to those persons.

The Election Commission team will go to the house of the corona infected or suspect and vote for the victim there. Videography of the entire process will also be conducted. Such voters will be able to cast their ballots by post, electronically or by hand to the election officer. This facility will be available to the corona affected persons as well as senior citizens above 80 years of age and handicapped people due to assembly elections.

In addition, the Election Commission said that masks and sanitiser will be available at all polling stations to ensure that voting is conducted in a "covid-safe" manner. The Election Commission is confident of vaccination of both polling personnel and voters to ensure that corona cases do not increase as a result of elections. Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra said that he has asked the Chief Secretaries of the poll-elect states to speed up immunization of all citizens above the age of 18 years and ensure that all election officers are given booster doses, who have been nominated as frontline workers.
