KOLKATA: Legislators from the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) brought up the subject of the State Cabinet's approval of unauthorised employment in government-run schools during the West Bengal Assembly session on Monday. They requested an adjournment of the subject, but Speaker Biman Banerjee denied their request as the matter was still pending.

Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition, and other BJP legislators left the House in protest of the Speaker's decision. This is a significant swindle,  Adhikari said when speaking to reporters. A Cabinet is proposing the nomination of undeserving candidates without taking merit into account. The entire Cabinet should go to prison for this.” He also pointed out that the Calcutta High Court had raised queries on the State’s Cabinet decision.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was given a directive by the court on November 23 to look into anyone who had applied to the court for "protecting illegally appointed officials." The Supreme Court later overturned the ruling, but it has since become a contentious matter in the State, which is already reeling from the recruiting scam.

The State government requested that extra posts be created in September before the High Court in order to accommodate individuals who were appointed improperly. The Trinamool Congress leadership has insisted that the High Court should decide whether to accept the State's recommendations.

BJP legislators opposed Sabitri Mitra of the Trinamool Congress over his remarks at a public forum that attacked "Gujaratis" as part of their demonstration outside the Assembly building.

In the meantime, Partha Chatterjee, a former state education minister who was detained in connection with the recruitment scam, appeared before a municipal court. Six other West Bengal Education Department employees who had been detained for allegedly taking part in the scam were also brought before the court. All seven suspects were denied bail by the judge, and they will all stay in custody until December 12. During the proceedings  the court sought to know when the investigation would be complete as  Chatterjee has been behind bars for almost 150 days.
