New Delhi: The first portable gaming console from ASUS is called ROG Ally. It has a number of features and is powered by AMD Ryzen Z1/Z1 Extreme APUs. The gadget presents itself as a fresh rival to Valve's Steam Deck with a starting price of $599 (nearly Rs. 49,200).

Although both the ROG Ally and Steam Deck are made of plastic, the former stands out more because of its angular shape, geometric patterns, and RGB lighting. Additionally, it is smaller and lighter than Steam Deck (590g vs. 669g). Both consoles have a 7.0-inch touchscreen, but Steam Deck's 60Hz HD+ display is superior to ROG Ally's 120Hz, Dolby Vision-compatible, Full-HD IPS-LCD display.

The AMD Z1 series processors are used in the ROG Ally. With six Zen 4 cores and four RDNA 3 cores, the Ryzen Z1 provides 2.8 TFLOPs of performance. With eight Zen 4 cores and twelve RDNA 3 cores, the Ryzen Z1 Extreme offers 8.6 TFLOPs of performance. The Steam Deck has a custom CPU that offers 1.6 TFLOPs of performance and has four Zen 2 cores and eight RDNA 2 cores.

A 40Wh battery is included in the ROG Ally and Steam Deck, with 65W and 40W fast-charging, respectively. They also have a headphone jack and a Type-C port. Additionally, the ROG Ally receives a customised ROG XG mobile interface. A built-in array microphone and dual speakers powered by Dolby Atmos are supported by the ASUS console. A dual-array microphone and stereo speakers with embedded DSP are features of its competitor.

While the Steam Deck is limited to Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0, the ROG Ally supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity.
A/B/X/Y buttons, D-pad, L & R analogue triggers, L & R bumpers, View & Menu buttons, assignable grip buttons, and two full-size capacitive touch analogue sticks are all found on the gamepads. Trackpads are included with Steam Deck. They receive a 6-axis gyroscope and HD haptics.

For $699 (approximately Rs. 57,400), you can pre-order the ROG Ally with Ryzen Z1 Extreme. It will be offered starting on June 13. In Q3 2023, the Ryzen Z1 variant will cost $599 (or about Rs. 49,200). A three-month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription is included. For 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB models, the Steam Deck is priced at $399, $529, and $649, respectively.

Compared to Steam Deck, The ROG Ally is a better deal. It features better hardware, a display with a higher resolution and a faster refresh rate, as well as modern connectivity standards. It also runs Windows 11 and supports all games and services, including those from Steam Deck. The Steam Deck, on the other hand, lags behind because it can only run native games due to OS restrictions.
