United Nations: At least 20 people were killed and several more were injured in a raid on an internally displaced persons (IDPs) camp in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), According to UN humanitarians.

According to sources, the attack near Drodro in Djugu area, Ituri, is the fourth raid targeting mostly internally displaced people in the province since November 19, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).  The new incident on Sunday is part of a troubling trend in terms of civilian protection and humanitarian access. Due to instability and attacks on displaced persons' camps, tens of thousands of people are unable to receive humanitarian aid. Some UN humanitarian partners have put their efforts on hold.

"These attacks are in breach of international humanitarian law and the 2009 Kampala Convention on Internally Displaced Persons," said UN humanitarian coordinator David McLachlan-Karr in the DRC. "They have to stop right immediately." In a statement made in Kinshasa, he added, "I call on the Congolese authorities, both at the national and provincial levels, to take urgent actions to safeguard people, including those displaced." According to OCHA, Ituri province is home to 1.7 million displaced persons, and there have been reports of population transfers after the recent attacks.
