Melbourne: In ongoing Australian Open Tennis championship, Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova stunned defending champion Caroline Wozniacki in the third round and made an entry in the pre-quarters round of the women’s singles event at Rod laver Arena.
In a gruesome contest that lasted two hours and 24 minutes, 31- year-old Maria, defeated Wozniacki in a set of 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
At starting of the match, it seems like the match was dominated by Wozniacki moved with a lead of 4-1 in the opening set. Sharapova, who was positioned perfectly to lose the opening set, made a stunning comeback and won the next five games with the help of 16 winners to register an extraordinary victory. In the second set she continues to take lead with a 3-0 lead and till the end of the second set took the match into a decider.
During the match, both the players battled hard to move ahead. The defending champion came hard on her opponent but failed to shake her resilience when Russian player taking a 5-3 lead, the task seemed difficult for Wozniacki to make a comeback.
On the first match point, Sharapova failed to capitalize but did not miss the second chance and went on to register a thumping victory over Wozniacki. In Next match, Sharapova will be crossing swords with Ashleigh Barty of Australia to make it to the quarter- round of the tournament.
