Ayodhya Election Fallout: Why BJP Lost Beyond the Ram Temple
Share:

In Ayodhya, BJP's defeat is more than just the Ram Temple:  Ayodhya, known globally as the birthplace of Lord Ram, has historically been a stronghold for the BJP. However, in a surprising turn of events, the Samajwadi Party's Awadesh Prasad, a Dalit candidate, clinched victory in the Faizabad parliamentary constituency, which includes Ayodhya. He secured a significant win over BJP stalwart Lallu Singh, marking the first time since 1957 that Faizabad has elected a Scheduled Caste representative to Parliament.

The defeat for the BJP came despite their heavy campaigning centered around the construction of the Ram temple and the consecration of Ram Lalla's idol in January, just months before the Lok Sabha polls. Lallu Singh's loss by over 54,000 votes underscores a broader rejection of the BJP's narrative in Ayodhya.

Awadesh Prasad's victory highlights the overwhelming support he garnered from over 2.5 lakh Passis in the constituency. His nine-time tenure as an MLA and founding membership in the SP boosted his credibility among voters, overshadowing BJP's religious campaign.

While the BJP's campaign relied heavily on the temple card across the country, Ayodhya itself voted against the party, with defeats in four out of five assembly segments in the Faizabad constituency. This outcome underscores a clear rejection of the BJP's strategy in the region.

In the aftermath of the election, Prasad pointed out that the BJP's attempt to win votes on the basis of the Ram temple misled local residents, who eventually realized they were being deceived. Despite efforts by the BJP to showcase development in and around Ayodhya post-temple construction, this narrative backfired.

Residents of Ayodhya faced various challenges post-temple construction, including issues with barricades, police presence, traffic diversions, and bureaucratic dominance. In rural areas, villagers felt a sense of insecurity, while urban centers experienced regulated property transactions and land acquisition notifications.

The defeat also reflects a broader shift in voter sentiment captured by the Samajwadi Party's slogan "Na Mathura, Na Kashi, Abki Baar Awadhesh Pasi." This slogan underscores a shift in voter preference away from the BJP's religious rhetoric towards broader socio-economic concerns.

In summary, Awadhesh Prasad's victory in Ayodhya is a significant blow to the BJP's dominance in the region, highlighting the electorate's growing concerns beyond religious identity towards pressing socio-economic issues.
