Ujjain: On Saturday evening, 18.82 lakh diyas were lit in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain city, creating a new Guinness World Record. About 20 thousand volunteers completed the task of lighting the diyas in large numbers on the banks of the Kshipra river. Swapnil Dangrikar of the Guinness World Records team said, the world record for lighting diyas before Ujjain was made in Ayodhya last Diwali, where 15.76 lakh diyas were lit.

He announced that Ayodhya's record has been broken by lighting 18.82 lakh diyas in Ujjain on Saturday evening. According to Guinness World Records adjudicator Dangrikar, the diyas had to be lit for at least five minutes which was successfully done here. The event was organized by the local administration with the help of citizens' groups. 

CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who arrived at the function along with his wife, later said that a total of 18,82,229 lamps were lit on the occasion. Due to this laser show was also staged. Sitting on a boat with his wife Sadhna Singh Chouhan, the CM observed the wonderful hues of lamps installed from Ramghat to Bhukimata. The lights of the ghats were turned off and the banks of the Shipra river were bathed in the light of the lamps. A laser show was also performed on this occasion. The title song of 'Shiva Jyoti Arpanam' was also presented.
