Severe storms hit Manipur causing widespread damage -Severe storms lashed various parts of Manipur on Sunday, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Officials reported extensive damage to homes, especially in areas like Canchipur and Tera in Imphal West, where hailstones punched holes through tin roofs. Videos circulating online captured the intensity of the storms, with strong winds tearing apart makeshift shelters in different regions.
The Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across several Northeastern states, including Manipur, until May 7. Videos shared on social media showed hail blanketing many areas, while trees were uprooted by the fierce winds. Climate activists attributed the havoc to rampant deforestation in the state, highlighting it as a consequence of climate change.
The devastation wrought by the hailstorms underscores the urgent need to address deforestation and its impact on the environment. Many residents lamented the loss of their homes and attributed it to the ongoing climate crisis exacerbated by environmental degradation.
In response to the adverse weather conditions, Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced the closure of all educational institutions until May 7 as a precautionary measure. He urged residents to stay vigilant and provided helpline numbers for assistance in affected areas:
