BERLIN: Maxim Eric Choupo-Moting scored twice as Bayern Munich defeated tenacious Augsburg 5-2 in the knockout round to go into the German Cup pre-quarterfinals.

Ermedin Demirovic got Augsburg off to a fast start at home on Wednesday night, keeping Bayern's defence busy. After nine minutes, the hosts' aggressive start paid off when Mads Pedersen had time to drill the ball past Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich after being set up by Elvis Rexhbecaj.

Choupo-Moting scored a narrow goal from a tight angle in the 27th minute to restore parity. Bayern responded strongly and applied more pressure.

Two minutes later, the visitors could have seized the lead, but Sadio Mane was unable to outduel Augsburg goalkeeper Tomas Koubek.

After the break, Julian Nagelsmann's team finally turned the tide when Choupo-Moting set up Joshua Kimmich, who scored in the 53rd minute with a low shot.

Six minutes later, Choupo-Moting, who was dangerous in front of goal, made it 3-1 by converting a rebound from close range. After Dayot Upamecano cleared a cross into the wrong goal to make it 3-2 after 65 minutes, Augsburg then cut the deficit in half against the odds.
