Beijing; Mao Ning, a spokeswoman for the Chinese foreign ministry, told reporters on Monday that Washington should stop politicizing the origins of the Covid-19 outbreak and "smearing" China with its claim that the pandemic escaped from a laboratory.
After being questioned by AFP about the claims made in the US press, Mao said, "Tracing the origin of SARS-CoV-2 is about science and should not be politicised."
According to an article in the Sunday Wall Street Journal, the US Department of Energy reviewed "new intelligence" suggesting that the virus that causes COVID-19 did not come from nature.

The renowned virology institute is located in Wuhan, the provincial capital of China's Hubei, where the virus was first reported. The Wuhan Institute of Virology was conducting research on bat coronaviruses in collaboration with the US National Institutes of Health in collaboration with the EcoHealth Alliance.
According to critics, this research involved dangerous "gain-of-function" virus manipulation, which has been rejected by EcoHealth and the NIH.

Since Covid-19 was declared a pandemic nearly three years ago, the issue of how and where the virus originated has not been fully resolved.
According to the theory of natural origin, the virus evolved in animals before spreading to people. According to its proponents, no host species or "patient zero" has been found to support the "laboratory leak" theory.
The DOE leak to The Wall Street Journal has been denied by the White House in the interim. The reported findings were described as "low confidence" according to National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, and other US intelligence agencies have not yet given their opinion.
