Kolkata: In the meantime, Swapan Dasgupta has resigned from the Rajya Sabha after being made a BJP candidate in West Bengal. His resignation has not yet been accepted. The TMC had questioned the candidature of Swapan Dasgupta TMC MP Mahua Moitra had sought disqualification of Dasgupta citing the rules of the Constitution. After the defects, Gupta said that I have not yet filled the nomination, all the disputes will be abolished before enrolment.

Mahua Moitra tweeted, "Swapan Dasgupta is the BJP's candidate in the West Bengal elections. The 10th Schedule of the Constitution says that if one joins any political party after six months with an oath, the Rajya Sabha member is disqualified if he joins any political party after 6 months with an oath. He was sworn in in April 2016. To join BJP should be disqualified now." On the defects of TMC, Swapan Dasgupta said," I know about the rules. If these questions arise after the nomination file, there would have been something to speak about. Now, when I have not filled the nomination so far, I don't have to make any comments. But, I can say that the nomination will be filled up by following all the rules."

Swapan Dasgupta is among the big faces of Bengal politics, he is also a reporter by profession. The BJP has also fielded union ministers and MPs in the Bengal elections. In West Bengal, Swapan Dasgupta has been fielded by the BJP from the Tarkeshwar assembly constituency were nominated for Rajya Sabha in April 2016. In the field of literature and education, he has been honored with the Padma Bhushan in the year 2015. Dasgupta was also on the post of a junior research fellow at Oxford College.
