BENGALURU: Green Building Certification Inc. (GBCI), the foremost authority on sustainability in building design, construction, and operations, has awarded Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the operator of Kempegowda International Airport (BLR Airport), the prestigious PEER (Performance Excellence in Electricity Renewal) platinum certification.

BIAL is the first airport operator in the world to receive a perfect score of 92/100 for its airport power infrastructure, according to an official statement released by BIAL on Tuesday.

BIAL sought PEER certification to analyse and enhance the airport's power system performance in order to ensure that it continues to meet its sustainable development goals, and was awarded the 'Platinum Rating' based on GBCI's rigorous certification and evaluation procedure. The LEED green building programme is administered by the GBCI, which is one of the world's major sustainability and health certification and credentialing bodies.

BIAL's commitment to building sustainably has resulted in exceptional performance. Distribution redundancy and auto restoration protect about 98 percent of the project's distribution circuit. It also boasts a 6.8 MW onsite solar PV system that helps maintain key services during grid outages and long-term blackouts, and it uses 100% renewable energy.
