The elder sister of Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion, was Bibi Nanaki ji (1464–1518). At her grandmother's house in the village of Chahal, currently located in the Lahore region of Pakistan's Punjab province, she was born in the year 1464 to parents Kalyan Chand Mehta (Mehta Kalu) and Mata Tripta. Some of the Sakhis use the most heartfelt language to describe the Guru's love for his sister. The devotion of a sister to her brother is a recurring motif in Punjabi folklore. There are numerous accounts of Nanaki's intense love and devotion for her brother, Nanak.

The first person to recognize Guru Nanak's spiritual grandeur and turn into his devotee was Bibi Nanaki, who was five years older than the Guru. She is frequently cited as the first Sikh. When Nanak constantly let their father down and enraged him, she shielded him from his fury. Throughout his earliest years, she was by his side. Guru Nanak Dev was married to Bhai Jai Ram, a highly regarded tax official when he was just six years old in 1475. Sultanpur, the Jalandhar Doab's former capital city, is now in the modern state of Kapurthala. Nanak remained a resident of his house. He protested against unjustly imposed Hindu ceremonial norms and ceremonies.

He enjoyed spending time with saints and donated money to the hungry and needy. His father gave up hope of ever getting him to act properly and get a respectable job in the community. Rai Bular, who had great respect for the young Guru Nanak, was constantly informed of Mehta Kalu's animosity towards him. He once brought Bhaiyya Jai Ram over and told him to take the boy to Sultanpur so the Nawab Daulat Khan of Sultanpur might hire him.
At the age of fifteen, Nanak moved in with his sister and began working as a manager of the royal granaries and supply stores of the Nawab of Sultanpur after receiving a letter of recommendation from him. Nanak's marriage to Sulakhani, the daughter of Baba Mool Chand Khatri and Mata Chando Rani of the hamlet Pakhoke, District Gurdaspur, was orchestrated by Bhai Jai Ram.

When Nanak came to Sultanpur to join Nawab's service and resided with her there, Bibi Nanaki, who adored her brother, felt blessed. Despite being childless, she adored Sri Chand and Lakhmi Das, the sons of Guru Nanak. She showed Guru Nanak affection in return, and once he left Nawab's service to spread his message, he made sure to visit Sultanpur to see his sister in between journeys.
When he had stopped by her for a visit in 1518, Bibi Nanaki temporarily imprisoned him after sensing her impending death. She soon passed away in the presence of her brother, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, as she had desired. Her husband, Bhai Jai Ram Ji, too passed away three days later. Their obsequies were performed by Guru Nanak. There is no doubt that Bibi Nanaki, the king of Talwandi, was possibly the first Guru Sikh, and Rai Bular, the second Guru Sikh.
