Washington: US President Joe Biden has declared a major disaster exists in the state Kentucky and has authorised federal assistance for recovery operations in areas damaged by violent tornadoes, severe storms, straight-line winds, and flooding, the White House said in a statement.
The President's declaration on Sunday makes federal money accessible to anyone affected in the counties of Caldwell, Fulton, Graves, Hopkins, Marshall, Muhlenberg, Taylor, and Warren. Other states have reported a total of 14 deaths.
"Assistance can take the form of grants for temporary housing and house repairs, low-interest loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programmes to help individuals and businesses recover from the disaster." According to sources, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who visited the hardest-hit town of Mayfield earlier on Sunday, said the death toll from the devastating tornadoes is likely to exceed 100.
Beshear verified at least 80 deaths, describing it as the most deadly tornado event in the state's history. He was cited as saying, "Nothing that was standing in the straight line of (one) tornado is still standing." "As we move forward, we are still hoping for some miracles to find more people." Tornadoes also hit Arkansas, Illinois, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee on December 10, according to reports.
