Patna: Starting from January 1, 2024, Bihar Police will enforce a new initiative, 'Mission Investigation@75 days,' making it mandatory for investigators to complete the investigation of cases within 75 days of FIR registration. Additionally, the performance of police stations and district police will be regularly reviewed on a monthly basis, focusing on enhancing the quality of investigations. The state government aims to make the police force more people-friendly and accountable, introducing measures to expedite case resolutions and streamline the criminal justice system.

According to J S Gangwar, Additional Director General (ADG) of Bihar Police (Headquarters), the new initiative emphasizes completing investigations, including filing chargesheets, within the stipulated 75 days for all cases except specific ones. Gangwar highlighted the importance of timely chargesheet submission, aligning with legal principles. The Bihar Police is also preparing for significant changes in the criminal justice system following the recent gazette notification by the Centre regarding new laws replacing the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), and Evidence Act.

Gangwar stated that the implementation of the new laws requires infrastructural enhancements, software updates, and training for existing human resources, and Bihar Police is gearing up for these changes. The three bills approved by Parliament seek to revamp colonial-era criminal laws, introducing stricter punishments for crimes such as terrorism, lynching, and offenses endangering national security. The bills received approval in both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha, marking a comprehensive legislative overhaul to ensure more stringent and modernized criminal laws.
