Chandigarh: Renowned painter and poet Imroz, celebrated for his enduring association with Punjabi poetess Amrita Pritam, passed away on Friday at the age of 97. Imroz, who had been dealing with age-related issues, spent his last days in a hospital and was brought back home shortly before his demise.

Born in 1926 in Punjab, Imroz's life intersected with Amrita Pritam's in the 1950s, at a time when she was already a prominent figure in Punjabi literature. The profound connection between them blossomed into a partnership that spanned over 40 years, enduring until Pritam's death in 2005.

Initially serving as an illustrator for Pritam, Imroz expressed themes of love, loss, and human relationships on canvas, complementing the essence of Pritam's poetry.

As Pritam's health declined, Imroz transitioned into the realm of poetry, penning several books dedicated to her memory. Many of Pritam's poems, particularly those exploring themes of love and companionship, drew inspiration from their enduring relationship.

Among Amrita’s most celebrated works, 'Main tainu phir milangi,' published in 2004, is believed to have been a tribute to Imroz. The significance of this piece gained wider recognition when a character quoted it in the 2018 film Manmarziyaan, featuring Taapsee Pannu. The legacy of Imroz's artistic and literary contributions remains intertwined with the rich cultural tapestry of Punjabi literature and art.
