Srinagar: After a hiatus of 10 weeks, congregational prayers finally resumed at Srinagar's Jamia Masjid on Friday, as reported by agencies. Despite the prayers taking place within the mosque, there was a notable absence as Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the customary speaker for Friday sermons, remained confined to his residence in the Nigeen area of the city, according to media reports.

The decision to suspend Friday prayers had been implemented due to concerns regarding potential protests arising from the Israeli attack in Gaza. Throughout this period, the historic mosque, situated in Srinagar's Nowhatta area, remained locked, with security personnel stationed outside to maintain law and order.

As per Media reports, the managing body of the mosque, Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid, released a statement indicating that police personnel had closed the mosque gates and conveyed that Friday prayers would not be allowed. Despite the resumption of prayers, the customary speaker, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, was not permitted to move out of his residence.
