Ahmadabad: The Gujarat government has taken a significant step by introducing the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita in government schools. The syllabus for imparting the essence of the Bhagavad Gita to school children has been officially released by Gujarat Education Minister Kuber Dindor. He asserted that this initiative is in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020.

The celebration of Geeta Jayanti, observed annually on Mokshada Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha in the Margashirsha month, prompted the Gujarat government to introduce the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita to students in classes 6th to 8th. Geeta Jayanti in 2023 falls on December 22.

Minister Kuber Dindor emphasized that by incorporating the Bhagavad Gita into the school curriculum, children will be exposed to its timeless lessons from an early age, fostering a new way of approaching life. He underscored that the Bhagavad Gita transcends specific religious boundaries, serving as a guide for life's principles. The curriculum will cover the essence of the 700 verses of the Bhagavad Gita, providing students with a valuable perspective on overcoming challenges and finding hope in adversity.

The decision to teach the Bhagavad Gita was initially announced by the Gujarat government last year, with plans to implement it in the new academic session. Due to delays in finalizing the curriculum, the program is now set to be implemented in the ongoing academic session. The initiative is exclusively for government schools initially, but there are plans to extend it to private schools in the future, with a thorough evaluation process. Starting from the next academic year, the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita will be integrated into the curriculum for students in classes 9th to 12th.
