Patna: In a concerning trend, Bihar has reported an alarming rise in dengue cases, with 6,146 cases documented in September alone. This marks the highest number of cases for the month in the past five years, as per data from the health department. Overall, the state has recorded 6,421 dengue cases this year, with a staggering 6,146 of them reported in September. This figure is nearly three times the 1,896 cases reported in September last year.

On a daily basis, Bihar saw 416 new cases on a recent Friday, with the highest number reported in Patna at 177 cases, followed by Munger (33), Saran (28), Bhagalpur (27), and Begusarai (17). The National Center for Vector Borne Disease Control of the Union Health Ministry has reported seven dengue-related deaths in Bihar until September 17 this year. Comparatively, last year, a total of 13,972 dengue cases were reported. Currently, 295 individuals are under treatment at 12 government hospitals in the state, with 127 receiving care at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital in Bhagalpur, 39 at VIMS in Pawapuri, and 28 at Patna Medical College and Hospital.

Medical experts advise the public not to panic, as dengue cases tend to increase during this season. Simple preventive measures such as keeping homes and surroundings dry and clean, wearing protective clothing, and using mosquito repellants and nets can help curb the spread of the disease. Identifying and eliminating potential mosquito breeding sites is also essential. Local authorities are actively responding to the situation. Patna District Magistrate Chandrasekhar Singh mentioned that the administration is closely monitoring the situation, conducting spraying and fogging operations, and organizing awareness campaigns on vector-borne diseases.

The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched an extensive drive to address the rising number of dengue cases in the city. Chemical fogging is being carried out with the assistance of 140 vehicles and hand-held devices. PMC has also formed 375 teams for fogging operations and is regularly sanitizing residential areas that have reported recent dengue cases. The concerted efforts of health authorities and public awareness campaigns are vital to controlling the spread of dengue in Bihar during this challenging period.
