The tenure of CJI Deepak Mishra ended on 2 October 2018. Ranjan Gogoi is appointed New Chief Justice. During his 13-month tenure, Justice Mishra made several landmark decisions, though he also had to contend with protests on several levels. Attempts were made to bring impeachment against him and many judges also opposed him.

Born on 3 October 1953 Chief Justice Deepak Mishra was passionate about media. He did not allow anyone to dominate media freedom. On several occasions, he made it clear that journalists should be given freedom of expression. Hearing the petition of a former Bihar MLA, he said that there may be some mistake in reporting, but cannot hold it forever. Journalists should be allowed freedom of expression. The former MLA filed a petition in the court that the media showed the news of illegal land allotment which was wrong and hence criminal defamation case should be filed against the channel. The Chief Justice quashed the petition, upholding the decision of Patna High Court.

Justice Mishra also used to explain to the media. He also emphasized that the media needs to become more responsible. Especially during the hearing of the Jai Shah defamation case, he clearly said that freedom should not be meant, writing anything. Deepak Mishra had said, "We are not suppressing the voice of the press, but sometimes journalists write something which is complete contempt of court. Journalists at high positions can write anything, is it really journalism? I have always been in favor of freedom of the press, but it is wrong to say anything about anyone and write anything, there is a limit. The electronic media cannot think that they can bring change overnight".
