Even after being financially weak, his family used to send him tins of ghee, cans of milk and cooked vegetables when he was staying and practising in the Chhatrasal Stadium. He is a gentleman and we know this because, in the year 2012, he refused to appear in a surrogate ad for a liquor brand believing that it would send out a wrong message to the youth and audience.

He started wrestling at the age of 14. His father was a wrestler too but also a D. T. C. Bus driver. Sushil Kumar is currently employed at the Indian Railway as an Assistant Commercial Manager.

He is the first person to get two Olympic medals for Independent India. Even after being a wrestler, Sushil does not eat non-vegetarian food and has also campaigned for PETA's go vegetarian campaign.

He has won two bronze, silver and gold in the Asian Championship.
