UTTAR PRADESH-SUAR: Bharatiya Janata Party ally Apna Dal (Sonelal) has made victory in the Suar assembly seat by a margin of 8,724 votes. Suar assembly seat was counted one of the last bastions of the Samajwadi Party. It had fallen vacant following the disqualification of Azam Khan's son Abdullah Azam Khan in a 15-year-old case. Apna Dal (S) had fielded Shafeek Ahmed Ansari, while the Samajwadi Party had selected Anuradha Chauhan for the elections.
Shafeek Ahmed Ansari received 68,630 votes and a vote share of 50.81 percent, as per the Election Commission. Anuradha Chauhan of the Samajwadi Party, on the other side, received 59,906 votes, giving her a 44.35 percent vote share. Along with the by-polls in UP, Odisha, and Meghalaya, elections for the Suar constituency were held on May 10. In an election when neither the Congress nor the BSP fielded candidates, 1.35 lakh people cast ballots.
The Apna Dal (Sonelal) candidate Rinki Kol is now leading Samajwadi Party contender Kirti Kol from Channbey by a margin of 9,381. Kirti Kol has received 72,480 votes after thirty rounds of counting; SP's Kirti Kol is in last place with 63,099 votes.
Abdullah Azam Khan, the son of Samajwadi Party stalwart Azam Khan, defeated Apan Dal (Sonelal) nominee Haidar Ali Khan in the Suar assembly constituency in 2022 by a margin of more than 61,000 votes. A court in Moradabad did, however, condemn Abdullah Azam Khan to two years in prison.
Azam Khan and his son were found guilty under section 353 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which prohibits using unlawful force to prevent a public official from doing his duties. The case concerned a 2008 dharna that a father and son combo had participated in.
Despite not fielding a candidate for the Suar constituency, the BJP was quite active during the election. The party, which is reeling after losing the assembly elections in Karnataka, the only southern state it controls, is relieved by its triumph in the by-polls and municipal elections in Uttar Pradesh.
