The BJP in Manipur expelled its chief spokesperson, Chongtham Bijoy, on Friday, a day after he called the National People's Party (NPP) a "parasite that had proved a threat" to the ruling alliance in the previous five years. The National People's Party (NPP), led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, has been a dominant party in the MDA state and an ally of the governing BJP in Manipur since 2017, despite the two parties contesting the two-phase assembly elections on February 28 and March 5.

Bijoy was expelled from the party's main membership for six years "for violation of the party's norms and regulations and breach of party discipline," according to a statement published by Manipur state BJP President A. Sharda Devi. Bijoy stated to the media soon after his expulsion from the BJP that he will be supporting Janata Dal (United) candidate Kh Suresh in the upcoming elections in the Uripok Assembly constituency.

"Because I spoke out against corruption, I was refused a party ticket. The party President issued an expulsion decision against me without giving me with a show-cause notice or following the proper procedure "he said Bijoy, who wanted to contest for the Assembly seat in Uripok, reacted angrily after the BJP nominated L. Raghumani, a former IAS officer, for the seat. He stated that despite being "a corrupt man," Raghumani was given the BJP ticket on the advice of influential people.
