New Delhi: BJP MP Varun Gandhi launched an attack on the Uttar Pradesh government on Friday, alleging that "crippling corruption" in procurement centres is completely out in the open, and that farmers are forced to sell their grains to middlemen.

Farmers have been protesting at various locations since November 26 of last year, demanding the repeal of three farm laws as well as a legal guarantee of a minimum support price for their crops. Expressing concern through the Twitter handle, Varun Gandhi said that till there is no statutory guarantee of Minimum Support price, farmers will continue to be exploited in mandis. Strict action should be taken on this. He also posted a video of him speaking apparently to a government official at a mandi in Bareilly. Raising the issue of hardship facing farmers, Gandhi is heard saying that it is a matter of "big shame" for the state government.

Varun Gandhi strongly demanded a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP), which is also one of the demands of farmer unions protesting three farm laws, claiming that unless this is done, farmers will continue to be exploited in 'mandis' (agricultural produce markets). Gandhi demanded that the matter be dealt with harshly.

On October 23, the BJP MP stated that farmers in Uttar Pradesh do not receive adequate prices for their crops and urged the Yogi Adityanath-led state government to provide them with the rights they deserve.
