Rajasthan has become the first state to implement Blindness Control Policy. Under the campaign of Nirogi Rajasthan, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has implemented this policy with the objective of ‘Right to Sight’.

The department of Medical and Health on the direction of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, released the policy document for the prevention of blindness last week.

The secretary of the medical and health department Dr. Prithvi said that “This policy has been brought with an aim to bring light in the lives of more than 3 lakh people suffering from visual impairment in the State."

This policy has been introduced with the sight to bring light to the lives of people of more than three lakh people suffering from visual impairment in the state. The prevalence rate of blindness in the country was 1.1 % in 2020 and work would be done to bring it down to 0.3 % through the blindness control policy.

Efforts to eliminate visual impairment will be made in the districts with collaborations with voluntary organisations, trusts, hospitals, and other charitable institutions working in this field. Special training will also be given to eye experts, surgeons, post-grad students, counselors working for eye donation, eye assistants, and people associated with it.

The government will run mandatory Keratoplasty centers and eye banks at all government medical colleges. And the cornea collected by the private organisations and NGOs getting financial help from the government will have to provide to the government institutions on priority.

The state government will work closely with private organisations to run a widespread campaign for eye donation. This policy would organise public awareness campaigns and numerous technical development initiatives aimed at eradicating blindness.

Medical teams had earlier said that they are emphasizing the need to implement the Rajasthan Government’s Chiranjeevi health Insurance scheme across India, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has reiterated to the Central Government.
