G20 extension of W20 - focuses on the gender-inclusive economic growth

G 20 EMPOWER (empowerment and progression of women’s economic representation) is an alliance formed to accelerate women’s leadership and empowerment in the private sector.

Women’s ambition, goals, and expectations are rising in tandem with India’s tremendous growth. India has attained the G20 presidency for this year, women’s development and other related issues have been represented as the key focus area among other agendas.

‘India will give priority to Women-led development in its G20 agenda’ the statement made by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi while taking the charge of the G20 presidency in Bali, Indonesia.

When the opportunity is given to the women’s in our country they can accomplish anything. Other various engagements groups cover different areas of concern in which Women20 (W20) is an official G20 group focusing on gender equity. These engagements groups are independent collectives that are led by organisation from the host country.

This will focus on the three areas of issues which are accountability for KPI Implementation, Women in SMEs as drivers of economic growth, Building digital resilience & future skill for women.

The Chair for this year W20 will be headed by the Dr. Sandhya Purecha, chairperson of Sangeet Natak Akademi. There will be other eminent Indian Delegates which include Dr. Jyoti Kiran Shukla, ex-chairperson of the 5th Rajasthan Finance Commission, Prof. Shamika Ravi IPS (Retd), Bharati Ghosh, Actress Raveena Tandon, and Bansuri Swaraj Advocate (Supreme Court of India). Also have Dharitri Patnaik, an Entrepreneur & Philanthropist as a Chief Coordinator.

W20 primary objective is to ensure that gender considerations are mainstreamed into G20 discussions and translated into the G20 Leaders Declaration as policies and commitments that foster gender equality and women’s economic empowerment.

The goals set by the W20 group is focused on giving diplomatic solutions to global issues and the goals are-inclusive consultations and action leading to a powerful and impactful communiqué, feeding W20 recommendations into the G20 consultations and negotiations, influence and feeding into the G20 Leader's Declarations and G20 communiqué, establish a stronger W20 global and national network, ensure continuity of the W20 agenda.

Without the advancement of women in society as a whole society cannot thrive the way it wants. Women’s development has been recognized to lead to prosperous societies overall.

The Indian government has also brought various initiatives like Stand-up India, PM MUDRA Yojana, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, POSHAN Abhiyaan, increasing the scope of entrepreneurship among women Self-help groups, etc.

There are five set priorities of W20 which are Women’s Entrepreneurship, Grassroot Women leadership, Bridging the Gender Digital Divide, Education & Skill Development, and Climate Change.

Women from tribal and rural areas, agriculture, handloom & handicrafts sector, micro & nano entrepreneurs, SHGs, Anganwadi workers, adolescent girls, women living in urban slums, and also homemakers.  Interactive sessions on G20 & W20 in schools and slum areas with the aim to include, engage and involve women from all segments and sectors.

The event will take place at three different locations during the 13 February to 20 June time period. 13-14 February 2023, 1st Inception Meet, Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India, 13-14 April 2023, International Meet Jaipur, Rajasthan, India, 19-20 June 2023, W20 Summit, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India.
