Fugitive Mehul Choksi gets relief, special court said this

Fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi has received some relief from the Bombay High Court. The Bombay High Court has directed the special court to hear a petition by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) but not pass a final order declaring Choksi as an Economic Fugitive Offender (FEO) for the next four weeks. After the declaration of FEO, the investigating agency gets the right to seize the property of the accused.

On Tuesday, Judge AM Badar gave these instructions to the special adjudication of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Choksi filed a petition in the Bombay High Court against the ongoing action in the lower courts. The Bombay High Court will hear this after four weeks.

Choksi, accused of cheating Punjab National Bank, is currently in Antigua. He gave an affidavit in the High Court that due to ill health, he cannot return to India. He claimed that he had gone out of the country for bypass surgery and not to avoid hearing. He will return to India as soon as he recovers.
