Brasilia: corona is wreaking havoc in Brazil. The country has passed the 10-million mark for reported infections Thursday, amid a deadly second wave and problems with its vaccination campaign.
According to the official data, Brazil reported over 51,900 new cases in 24 hours. The country became the third to reach the grim mark -- after the United States and India. Over the same one-day period, 1,367 people died, bringing the total to over 243,400. Brazil's figure of 10,030,626 came amid mounting criticism of how President Jair Bolsonaro's government has handled the epidemic and vaccination response.
So far, three percent of the population of 212 million have received one of two required vaccine doses. The month-old campaign with China's CoronaVac and the AstraZeneca shot, has had to be stopped in several cities and towns, however, due to a shortage of doses -- including in Rio de Janeiro.
Meanwhile, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), as many as 13,193 new COVID-19 cases and 97 deaths were reported in India in the last 24 hours. With the new cases, the coronavirus tally in the country has reached 1,09,63,394 including 1,39,542 active cases and 1,06,67,741 discharges. The death toll has mounted to 1,56,111 with the loss of 97 more lives due to the virus in the last 24 hours.
