Brazilian president unveils deal to import Russian diesel

SAO PAULO: Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has announced that as part of efforts to bring down domestic fuel prices, his government has agreed to start importing diesel fuel from Russia.

"It's resolved now. Brazilian diesel can start to come from Russia in 60 days "On Monday, Bolsonaro spoke to journalists from the government building in Brasilia.

According to the Brazilian reports, the President defended the choice to import Russian diesel by claiming that it is less expensive than other foreign suppliers picked by the government-owned oil corporation Petrobras.

"A little over 30 percent of the diesel used in Brazil is imported. Instead of accepting the price from those who charge more, we must import from those who sell at a better price "added Bolsonaro.\

Brazilian president noted that Brazil is not involved in the war between Russia and Ukraine and that, during a meeting with Vladimir Putin in February in Moscow, the two leaders decided to continue supplying fertilisers to Brazilian agriculture.

Presidents in Brazil have significant lawmaking powers, exercised either by proposing laws to the National Congress or by using provisional measures, an instrument with the force of law that the president can enact in cases of urgency and necessity except to make changes to some areas of law.
