A callus is a thickening area of skin after repetitive friction or pressure. A corn mostly develops on top of or between toes. Calluses and corns may or may not be painful. When painful, must be treated immediately.

What causes calluses and corn?

External factors could be Manual labour, activities that increase frictional stress applied to the skin of the hands and feet, not wearing shoes, ill-fitting shoes or socks, repetitive motion on the same parts of the body.

Internal factors such as damaged sweat glands, scars and warts, bony prominence such as hammertoes and bunions.

Symptoms of calluses and corns

Calluses symptoms

 It can vary in colour from white to gray-yellow, brown, or red, maybe painless or tender, thickening of skin without distinct borders, may throb or burn.

Corn symptoms

It may be hard or soft, often painful, distinct borders and texture varies from dry, waxy, transparent to a horny mass.

Treatment for calluses and corns

Antibiotics with possible incision and drainage for any infected callus or corn. Periodic shaving or cutting off the hardened area on the skin by surgical means or with medicines that break up hardened areas of skin. Salicylic acid is a common chemical agent that can break down the thick layer of skin.
