Lucknow: After the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, all eyes are now on the state's Legislative Council (MLC) elections. After the BJP candidates were elected unopposed in 9 seats out of 36 MLC seats of the local body, now 27 seats are to be voted on April 9. In such a situation, there is a main contest between BJP and SP, but in many seats of Purvanchal, independent and rebel candidates have raised concern for BJP.

In Purvanchal, there is a direct contest between two parties in many seats, so a triangular contest has become in many seats. In the MLC elections, the battle has become interesting with close and relatives of Bahubalis like Dhananjay Singh, Brajesh Singh and Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya entering the electoral fray. From Azamgarh to Varanasi and Pratapgarh, their own rebel leaders remain a problem for the BJP, who are trying to ensure the victory of their close ones. Dr. Sudama Patel from BJP is contesting the MLC seat of Varanasi-Chandauli-Bhadohi region, in front of which is Umesh Yadav from SP and independent candidate Annapurna Singh, wife of mafia Brijesh Singh.

Here the competition has become triangular. It is generally believed that the party which is in power wins the MLC elections as well, but the BJP candidate's concern has increased due to the landing of Mafia Brijesh Singh's wife in Varanasi. The reason for this is that the Varanasi MLC seat has been occupied by Brijesh Singh's family for two decades. It is not easy for the saffron party to break Brijesh Singh's political supremacy.
