CANADA: Surrey City Council in British Columbia, Canada, unveiled  the commemorative Guru Nanak Village Way street sign in Cloverdale to commemorate the 550th Parkash Purb (birth anniversary) of the first Sikh master Guru Nanak Dev.

The city is home to a sizable Sikh community. Surrey City Council approved a proposal from the Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society, and the sign was put on the corner of 64 Avenue and 175 Street on Friday.

The road leads to the future Guru Nanak Diversity Village long-term care facility.  Satbir Singh Cheema, President and CEO of PICS, said  that the street received a "secondary street name in the form of a commemorative name" in both English and Punjabi. He described PICS as a non-profit community-based organisation that offers a variety of services such as senior citizen care and housing programmes.

He said that the Surrey City Council was joined by the PICS Society, elected government officials, the Counsel General of India (Vancouver), and community members to commemorate the inauguration of the commemorative Guru Nanak Village Way street sign in Cloverdale.

"With over 104,720 South Asians living in Surrey, naming this street after Guru Nanak Dev symbolises not only our city's multicultural mosaic, but also the rich Punjabi legacy. It is a celebration of our minorities, various cultures, and communities, as well as their contributions to Surrey being a truly inclusive society and city "Cheema said.
