The number of cancer cases in India is increasing at an alarming rate, according to data presented by the Union Health Ministry in the parliament. The data reveals a significant rise in cancer cases over the past three years, with a steady increase in new cases reported each year.

In response to a question raised by TDP MP Dr. Byreddy Shabari, the ministry provided data on the number of cancer cases reported in the country between 2022 and 2024. According to the data, 14,61,427 new cancer cases were reported in 2022, which increased to 14,96,972 in 2023 and further rose to 15,33,055 in 2024 (till date).

The data, sourced from the Council of Medical Research's National Cancer Registry Program, highlights the growing burden of cancer in India. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also warned of a 77% increase in cancer cases globally by 2050.

According to the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), changes in lifestyle and environment are major contributors to the rising cancer cases. Other factors, such as tobacco consumption, alcohol, obesity, and air pollution, are also leading to an increase in cancer incidence.

The IARC data reveals that among men, mouth, lip, and lung cancers are on the rise, while breast and cervical cancers are increasing rapidly among women. The government data and WHO warnings highlight the need for increased awareness and efforts to combat cancer in India. With the number of cases expected to rise, it is essential to invest in cancer research, treatment, and prevention programs to mitigate the growing burden of this disease.
