NEW DELHI: the Union Home Ministry has reduced the retirement age of all central armed police personnel to 60 years. The Central Armed Police Force consists of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Armed Border Force (SSB). Till now, select rank officers retired at the age of 57. The government has taken this step in view of the January order of the Delhi High Court.

In its order, the High Court had termed the separation of age of personnel in these four forces as discriminatory and non-constitutional. The court had said that it produces two classes in the Armed Forces. Some of the officers had approached the court against their different ages in the retiree. The Ministry has directed all the forces to comply with the High Court order and amend the rules.

An order issued by the Home Ministry said that two options will be given to those who have retired at the age of 57 years between the Delhi high court order and the direction of the ministry. Either they return all the pension benefits and join the service back or immediately get the pension benefit on retirement after completing 60 years of service.

As per the ongoing policy, all central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel retire at the age of 60, while personnel ranging from constables in CRPF, BSF, ITBP and SSB to Commandant rank retire at the age of 57. However, in these four forces, officers from Deputy Inspector General to Director General retire in 60 years. These forces are responsible for the internal security of the country.
