An Indian politician and 26th Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh celebrated his 81 birthday this year 2023.Captain Amarinder Singh (born 11 March 1942), is an Indian politician, military historian, former royal and Indian Army veteran who served Chief Minister of Punjab in 15 times till 2022.
Captain Amarinder Singhwas born into a Sikh family and is a member of the Phulkian dynasty. His parents are Patiala natives Rajmata Mohinder Kaur and Yadavindra Singh, who served as the Maharaja of Patiala from 1938 until 1974. Malwinder Singh is one of his brothers, and Heminder Kaur and Rupinder Kaur are his two sisters. He has three siblings in all. He enjoys playing polo, travelling, and reading in his own time. For his academic pursuits, he attended the Welham Boys School in Dehradun, the Lawrence School in Himachal Pradesh, and The Doon School in Dehradun. He earned his bachelor's degree from the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, and the National Defence Academy in Pune. After graduating, he served as a Captain for the Indian Army from June 1963 until December 1966. He began his position as adjutant in December 1964, working under the direction of the general officer commanding the Western Command. Once the Indo-Pakistan War began in 1965, he rejoined the Indian Army as a member of the Sikh Regiment.
Career in Politics of Amarinder Singh: Rajiv Gandhi, a close friend and schoolmate of Captain Amarinder, brought him to the Congress party. He was first elected as a Lok Sabha Member in 1980. He voluntarily resigned from his position in Congress and the Parliament in 1984 to protest the Army's involvement in Operation Blue Star. Subsequently, after joining the Shiromani Akali Dal, he won the Talwandi Sabo assembly constituency and the Punjab State Legislature. He held the position of Minister for Agriculture, Forestry, Developments, and Panchayats in the state government.
He broke away from the Shiromani Akali Dal in 1992, founded a small faction called the Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthic), and merged with the Congress in 1998. He served two terms as the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, from 2010 to 2013 and 1999 to 2002. Prior to this, he was Punjab's chief minister from 2002 until 2007. He has been the head of the Punjab Congress Campaign Committee since 2013 and receives a regular invitation to the Congress Working Committee.
He defeated prominent BJP figure Arun Jaitley in the general elections of 2014 and was elected to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha for five terms, serving Patiala three times and Samana and Talwandi Sabo once each. From 1 September 2014 to 23 November 2016, he held the positions of Member of the Standing Committee on Defense and Member of the Consultation Committee for the Ministry of Defense. He was appointed President of the Punjab Congress on November 27, 2015, and on March 16, 2017, in Chandigarh's Punjab Raj Bhavan, he took office as the 26th Chief Minister of Punjab.
