Amarinder Singh had contested the assembly elections in alliance with the BJP after forming a party under the name of Punjab Lok Congress (PLC).
Captain Amarinder Singh's party was allotted the 'hockey stick and ball' symbol by the Election Commission. The PLC Congress had fielded candidates in 37 seats in the assembly elections. Captain Amarinder Singh himself had contested from Patiala city but had to face defeat. Ajitpal Singh Kohli of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) defeated Amarinder Singh by 13,000 votes.
