Chennai: On Friday, various farmers associations and trade organisations called for a statewide shutdown in the state to protest against the ongoing violence against Tamils in Karnataka over the Cauvery issue, as a result of which Tamil Nadu is witnessing a one-day bandh, today.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), along with the other parties are in the support of bandh, which will be effective from 6am to 6pm.

The statement has been issued by the DMK president M Karunanidhi, urging all members of the party to support the bandh.

Government buses will operate on friday. But, Petrol bunks, schools, private milk distributors and many grocery shops will remain closed.

After the Supreme Court directed the state government to release 15,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, the massive protests erupted in Karnataka, especially on the streets of Bengaluru and Mysuru on Monday.
