Aircel Maxis case: CBI court gives big relief, Chidambaram and Karti get anticipatory bail

New Delhi: Former finance minister and veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram have been granted anticipatory bail in the Aircel Maxis case. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court on Thursday said that Chidambaram and Karti should be released immediately on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh in the event of arrest. However, the court has also asked Chidambaram and Karti not to tamper with witnesses and evidence and to cooperate in the investigation.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had categorically refused to grant relief to Chidambaram in the INX Media case. Chidambaram had filed an anticipatory bail plea in the Supreme Court to avoid the arrest of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), but the court today rejected his application. A division bench of Justice Bhanumathi and Justice Bopanna rejected Chidambaram's anticipatory bail plea.

Earlier, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the ED in the apex court, opposed Chidambaram's anticipatory bail, saying that if Chidambaram is granted anticipatory bail, it would have disastrous consequences. He said that this is because it will have a direct impact on cases like Vijay Mallya, Mehul Choksi, Nirav Modi, Sharda Chit Fund, Terror Funding. However, now Chidambaram and his son Karti have been granted bail from the CBI court in the Aircel Maxis case.
