Lucknow: A special court of CBI has decided to continue further hearing in the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition case through video conferencing. The apex court on 8 May has directed the special court to conclude the trial proceedings by 31 August. The trial was earlier scheduled to be completed by April 20, but could not be done due to the closure of the courts in view of the lockdown enforced due to the coronavirus.

The special CBI court on Friday said the proceedings were interrupted due to the lockdown and hence the decision was taken. BJP leaders LK Advani, MM Joshi, Uma Bharti and VHP leader Champat Rai Bansal are charged in the case. The court has recorded the statements of all the prosecution witnesses who were produced by the CBI.

During this, the defense filed an application on Friday to summon the three prosecution witnesses for cross-examination, as they were not cross-examined when their statements were recorded in 2016-17. Taking the application, Special Judge SK Yadav asked the defense to present a list of specific questions on which he wanted to cross-examine these prosecution witnesses. The court will next hear the case on 18 May.
