New Delhi: The Central government has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court amid a hearing to take over the reins of mainstream media, electronic media after objections raised over a news channel programme. In its affidavit, the apex court said that there is a need to create regulation for digital media before mainstream media, as the impact of digital media is wider than mainstream media.

The Centre has said in the apex court that "The petition filed mentions only the name of one channel, so the Supreme Court should not process the formation of amicus curie or committee to issue a guideline for the media. In view of the serious impact and potential of digital media, if the Supreme Court wants to bring in regulation, it should be done first about digital media.  Because there are already adequate guidelines and judicial announcements on electronic media and print media".

The central government said that "The mainstream media i.e. TV news channels, telecasts are only one-time work. But the reach of digital media is quite wide and fast. It's far more readable and viewable." The area of freedom of speech and the balance of responsible journalism is already governed by statutory provisions and previous decisions," the government said in the court.
