Srinagar: The process has started to strengthen the roots of Panchayati Raj in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Under this, elections are being held for the first time in the state. After removing Article 370 of the Constitution on August 5 last year, this is going to be the first major political activity in the state.

Whether or not political parties of Jammu and Kashmir will be involved in this political process is not yet clear, but the government has started efforts for it on its behalf. The central government is now implementing the tenth provisions of the 73rd Constitutional Amendment in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, which is pending in the state for 28 years. The three-tier Panchayati Raj will be fully implemented in Jammu and Kashmir. This will be the first time in the history of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Center has created 14 posts in each district for the establishment of the District Development Council (DDC). All these posts will be filled through direct election. The Center hopes that this will create a new class of leadership in the state, which will have full faith in the Constitution of India. This new leadership will fulfil the development aspirations of the state. To make the DDC effective, it has been decided to give the status of Minister of State to the Chairman of DDC.
