Colombo: Former Sri Lankan fast bowler Chaminda Vaas has resigned from the post of the fast bowling coach of the national team on Monday due to a pay dispute with the country's cricket board. He was appointed to this post only three days ago. Vaas resigned just before the team left for the West Indies tour.
A senior Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC) official said, "We could not agree on his terms, so he resigned from his post." SLC said in a statement, "It is particularly disheartening to note that in an economic climate such as the one facing the entire globe right now, Mr Vaas has made this sudden and irresponsible move on the eve of the team's departure, based on personal monetary gain." After the team's embarrassing performances against South Africa and England recently Vaas was appointed as Sri Lanka's fast bowling coach in place of David Secker of Australia last week.
Vaas was scheduled to leave for the West Indies with the team on Monday for a two-Test series in addition to a series of three T20 and three ODIs. A board official said that Vaas, who was among the top fast bowlers in the country, has also resigned as the coach of SLC Academy.
