Sebastian Pinera, Chile's former president, died in a helicopter crash on Tuesday, as announced by his office. Pinera, aged 74, was a prominent figure, having served twice as the nation's leader. He was known for his billionaire status and his involvement in various sectors including aviation, television, and football.

The crash occurred in Lago Ranco, a popular vacation spot for Pinera and his family, located about 920 kilometers south of the capital, Santiago.

In a statement, Pinera's office expressed deep regret over his passing, confirming his death. Fortunately, three other individuals who were on board the helicopter survived the crash.

President Gabriel Boric, who succeeded Pinera in 2022, declared three days of mourning along with a state funeral scheduled for Friday. Boric acknowledged Pinera's efforts for the country, stating that he genuinely sought what he believed was best for Chile.

Leaders from across Latin America, including Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and former Bolivian presidents Evo Morales and Jeanine Anez, paid tribute to Pinera. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro also expressed condolences, emphasizing solidarity with the Chilean people.

Colombia's Foreign Ministry extended sincere condolences, recalling Pinera's support during peace negotiations with the FARC guerrilla group. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed surprise and sadness at Pinera's demise.

Following the news, supporters gathered outside Pinera's party headquarters and his residence in Las Condes, leaving flowers, messages, and lighting candles in his memory.

Pinera served two non-consecutive terms as president, first from 2010 to 2014 and then from 2018 to 2022.

Challenges in His Second Term

Pinera's first term was marked by successful efforts in disaster recovery and rescue operations. However, his second term faced challenges, including widespread protests against social inequality. Critics viewed Pinera, a wealthy businessman, as disconnected from the struggles of ordinary citizens.

The government's response to the protests, including the deployment of the military, was criticized as ineffective and exacerbated tensions. Protesters demanded reforms to address economic disparities and criticized the privatization of essential services.

The protests ultimately led to a referendum on changing the constitution, highlighting Pinera's disconnect from public sentiment.

Pinera's tenure was further marred by the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crises. Allegations of conflicts of interest and involvement in financial scandals tarnished his reputation, leading to low approval ratings.

At the time of his death, Pinera's net worth was estimated at $2.4 billion. He is survived by his wife, four children, and nine grandchildren.
